Conservatory

CCM is a comprehensive choral music education and performance program for children aged 5 - 17 years that strives for music literacy and independence. Students learn to sing, read and write music while participating in an academic curriculum that incorporates music theory, vocal skills, composition and history alongside the choral art experience. Auditions usually happen in the spring and summer, but we are happy to answer questions anytime.

The Courses & The Choirs

The Conservatory program offers ten graded levels of age and skill appropriate musicianship classes and three choirs. The choirs perform diverse and challenging repertoire. All classes and choirs meet twice a week, on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings from September to May. Performances are held each semester.

Beginner 1–3 students sing in Treble Choir

The first three levels of our musicianship classes come together to form our beginning choir, called the Treble Choir. Students meet twice weekly for a total of 2½ contact hours per week.

Beginners learn the fundamentals of music through play in a structured setting. The curriculum lays the foundation upon which to build musical literacy in a fun and engaging way. The focus during these years is to prepare the younger children with a strong educational foundation and a rich and joyful singing experience.

The Treble Choir sings mostly in unison, with the addition of some two-part music in the second semester. Emphasis is on healthy and tuneful singing. The Treble Choir sings mostly in English but does learn songs in different languages each year. This ensemble performs in both the holiday and spring concerts.

Intermediate 1–3 students sing in Lyric Choir

Students meet twice weekly for a total of 4 contact hours per week, enjoying progressively challenging musical games and activities that reinforce their advancing music skills. They learn vocal technique, ensemble singing, and performance etiquette; how to follow a conductor, read music from choral scores, and sing in unison, two and sometimes three parts with healthy tone, good tuning and clear diction.

Students sing high-quality choral selections in two- and three-part harmony, from varied historical periods and cultures, and often learn to sing in languages other than English —challenging works that will enrich and strengthen their music reading abilities and understanding. They perform formally twice yearly and occasionally for special events.

Level 3 students are often invited to participate in Concert Choir performances and tours. Intermediate 3 graduates must pass a written and practical assessment to advance to Solfá level classes and to sing in Concert Choir.

Solfá 1–4 students sing in Concert Choir

Students meet twice weekly for a total of 4½ contact hours per week. They continue their education during four years of Solfá Classes where they are introduced to advanced levels of music theory, harmony, dictation, sight reading, composition and conducting.

Concert Choir is the most advanced performance level and the designated performing choir of Children's Chorus of Maryland. Ensemble skills stress artistic interpretation, refined tuning, a cappella singing and excellence in performance. Students have additional opportunities to perform, tour, record and broadcast throughout the community, and beyond, including collaborations with professional organizations from festivals to operas. This ensemble sings repertoire in three and four-part harmony from a variety of historical periods and diverse cultures, performed in multiple languages.

Choristers who complete Solfá 4—marking the final year of the Conservatory program—are honored in a graduation ceremony.

Tour Choir

Eligible members of Concert and Lyric Choirs combine to perform and travel as the Tour Choir. Post Covid we strive to return to offer travel and performance opportunities to the Tour Choir every other or every third year. Tour days may be long, but often include planned visits to cultural and historic sites, relaxed outings or hikes and sight-seeing in between rehearsals and performances. In recent years, CCM’s Tour Choir destinations have included Chestertown MD, Poughkeepsie New York, Eugene Oregon, Montréal and Québec Canada. In previous years, the Tour Choir has performed in Hawaii, Budapest Hungary, Prague Czech Republic and Vienna and Salzburg Austria. Tour Choirs have sung under the batons of distinguished clinicians and conductors including Bob Chilcott, Henry Leck and Gabriela Thész.

Overview

Requirements

The program accepts children 5½ years old and up following a successful audition.

The Curriculum

The curriculum is based on the sequential application twice a week of the Kodály concept and Gordon Music Learning Theory, further extended by the pedagogic insights of CCM’s founder, Dr. Betty Bertaux. This well-developed approach is effectively and joyfully applied by our educators, all of whom possess master’s degrees in music education and hold Kodály Certification.  Our goal is that every child progresses through each graded level with advancing skills and confidence.  Parents receive a progress report at the end of every semester from both the musicianship class teacher and the choir/Artistic director.

Rehearsals and performances

Rehearsals are held twice a week. All our choirs perform at our self-produced annual concerts in the winter and spring. Upper choir members have additional engagements in the community and beyond. CCM singers work with amateur and professional musicians, conductors, and artists who freely remark on the professionalism and artistry of our choirs.

Parent Association

CCM relies on the generosity of time, talent and resources from our family members to help realize opportunities for our young musicians. Families are asked to volunteer a minimum of twelve (12) “Family Involvement Program” (FIP) hours per semester. Many opportunities arise to fulfill this requirement, but one may choose to buy out the hours at a set rate.

Meet the Teachers

Teaching the CCM way requires that our educators not only enjoy teaching enthusiastic, musical children, but that they themselves are highly trained in the pedagogical method we use. It’s “Art of Play” in action. Our teachers use a series of carefully designed songs, listening and movement activities and musical games to engage a child’s intellect, voice and body. The result is learning made fun without sacrificing rigor.

Why CCM?

Over the course of our curriculum, students receive expert instruction that leads to the building of a solid musical foundation of skills and conceptual understanding from which meaningful choral work and collaboration flows. Our playful, intentional work prepares young singers to undertake increasingly challenging choral pieces with grounded confidence, to perform with remarkable understanding and artistry, and to accumulate positive experiences that reinforce embracing difficult work, as a team with others, with enthusiasm.

A choir in which every member possesses similar understanding and facility of musical concepts and skills is capable of remarkable levels of accomplishment and depths of expression. This comprehension is apparent and palpable even in very young children, and is often astonishing to audiences.

Our students often find true friendships at CCM, sharing this musical journey with like-minded peers. They learn together, sing together, sometimes dance together. They discuss the texts and poetry of our songs together. They solve problems together and express empathy and engage in community action to benefit others together. They work to improve their choir’s sound together and they encourage one another.  They celebrate their team when they master something difficult that they have been working on for a long time together.  It is magic and it is youth at its best.

Testimonials

  • I am a musician, but limited to instrumental repertoire and had no idea how much beautiful choral music there is in the world. Spectacular selections, wonderful accompaniment, and the children, well, there are no words.  It was such a joy and honor to see [my children] in such a rich, artistic environment.

  • It is impossible not to fall in love with an institution that has such a unique mission, such dedicated staff and, more importantly, such wonderful singers! The world needs more organizations like CCM in which high standards of music performance and music education are combined to provide children with a life-changing experience.
    Fernando Malvar-Ruiz
Artistic Director, Los Angeles Children's Choir; Litton-Lodal Music Director, The American Boychoir
  • CCM provided a community of people like me. My friends understood what it was like to have three songs in your head at once, understood what it was like to spontaneously burst into song — and they’d join me! I think I took it for granted that musicians were all around me, because I miss that more than everything else.
    Lianna G.
    CCM alumna
  • I’ve looked around at many different choirs in this whole region and I’ve never found any other that actually offers an education program with the singing. And to be honest, the main reason why we come this far is because the kids love it. They want to come; they’re excited to come. They skip down the hallways.
    CCM Parent
  • When I find that some of my students are members of the Children’s Chorus, I rejoice, for they are the leaders in my choruses and ensembles. The musical training they have received is second to none, and they sing in tune with beautiful vowels. As a music teacher, I benefit from these skills.
    Alice Mack
Head, Music Department, St. Paul's School for Girls, Choral Director
  • [W]e’ve been so impressed with the way the program is set up in terms of the educational component. When music is put in front of [them], they know how to read the music, they know how to sing the music and they know how to put it all together so beautifully. It’s really amazing. All these kids have kind of grown up together. It’s a great way to build relationships outside their normal cliques and really stretch themselves.
    CCM Parent
  • Every year I’ve spent in CCM, I’ve gotten shivers from my arms to my toes and in that moment I know that I am completely and undeniably happy. Whether it happens while standing up on stage singing, bowing to applause after a song, or simply sitting around laughing with friends, I’ve felt this every year without fail, and I’ll never forget it.
    Shae R.
    CCM alumna
  • I am so 150% persuaded that this is life-affirming, life-altering for [my children]…. [They] are so nourished by this, not just musically…. I could never have been prepared for how it was going to impact our family. It’s just so enriching. You’re seeing your kids joyful.
    CCM Parent
  • The concert on Saturday was so delightful! I thought the children were magnificently trained and they really seemed to love what they were doing. Your soloists were outstanding and the accompanist played beautifully.
    Felice Homann
Managing Director, Concert Artists of Baltimore
  • The curriculum is challenging for the children, yet they clearly thrive in it. CCM does more than teach the minimum required to get children to sing beautifully on stage. They receive an exceptional music education.
    CCM Parent
  • I always look forward to Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings when I get to spend time with my best friends. Even though none of us go to school together, we all share a common love for music which brings us closer together…. CCM is more than just singing; it’s friendship, performing, education and great memories that will last a lifetime.
    Veronica P.
    CCM alumna, former CCM intern
  • We knew a family that was in CCM, and the seriousness of the program along with the obvious joy and learning their kids were experiencing convinced us to try it. We've never regretted it.
    CCM Parent
  • There is never a raised voice or pounding in [the] classroom—just lots of gentle, precise guidance and humor. And love. From the sequential, skill-based Kodály classes for every child in [the] choir to the sheer beauty of head-tone singing....
    Carol Thomas Downing
Founder and Director, Virginia Children's Chorus and Founder, Peabody Children's Chorus
  • The difference with Children’s Chorus of Maryland is the training is much more intensive and focused. I think it requires a lot of discipline on the part of the children, but it also fosters that discipline.
    CCM Parent
  • To a prospective parent, I would say don’t ... let your kids miss this opportunity. It is an experience they will treasure forever, and not only will they make wonderful friends, but they will learn lifelong skills, and it’s just something they will treasure always. [T]his chorus not only changed my life, but it has changed the lives of many children.
    Amy G.
    CCM alumna, Special education teacher
  • Let me express my admiration for your dedicated staff that I had the pleasure to observe at the open house. It was astonishing to watch your staff teaching complex concepts to such young children and keeping them so interested!
    CCM Parent
  • The Children’s Chorus is a truly professional ensemble which exhibits both discipline and an artistic excellence.
    Moris Cotel
    Composer
  • The teachers are exceptional. The whole time I was working on my audition to [college] for vocal music, [Ms. Mairee] was helping me through, and she deserves a great amount of credit for why I was accepted. The commitment, the friendship, the experience, and the memories—it’s what truly makes CCM great.
    Moran B.
    CCM alumna
  • [CCM is] an outstanding combination of fine music making, genuine scholarship, ear training, theory, sight singing, and just plain fun. A rare opportunity for singers to gain the skills that make them truly literate musicians.
    Andrea Burgoyne
    CCM parent, retired CCM administrator
  • The Kodály System is probably the world’s most advanced and fruitful method of developing the general musicality of children in use today. And in Baltimore we are fortunate to have the talented and dedicated Betty Bertaux and her faculty, serious and active disciples of this concept, at its disposal in raising the level of music education in the Baltimore area.
Isador Saslav and Ann Heiligman Saslav
    Violinist and Concert Pianist
  • CCM is committed to the education that they give their children. Kids learn to understand how music works, they understand how to be musical and how to be musicians. The classes we teach are not just fun and games, although they are a lot of fun and games; they are musicianship classes that teach small, small people to be musicians.
    Suzannah Bauer Norris
    CCM alumna, former CCM teacher
  • [CCM] is so positive in our children’s lives. They feel esteemed. Clearly, they’re being stretched every time they go into that classroom. They know it’s OK to try and fail. They learn: You fall down, you step up. We really feel like CCM is an indispensable part of our community. It’s just one of these little gems—one of Baltimore’s great little secrets.
    CCM Parent
  • The Children’s Chorus of Maryland is excellently disciplined, impressive for its authoritative interpretation of a wide repertoire of works from early periods to the present.
    Elliot W. Galkin
Musicologist; Former Director of the Peabody Institute
  • [T]heir voice becomes their instrument. Literally. CCM is very committed to the health of the voice, and as a parent, I appreciate that.
